so ive been licensed about 8 months now and a buddy at my local club keeps telling me i need to try a contest before the year is out. i think CQ WW SSB is coming up end of october? i honestly dont even fully understand how the scoring works with the zones and multipliers and all that but he says just jump in and figure it out as you go.

i run a pretty modest setup, IC-7300 into a G5RV up about 30 feet, nothing fancy. was wondering if anyone has tips for a first timer or if there are better contests to start with. ive heard Field Day is good for beginners but that already passed. also been seeing stuff about SOTA activations and wondering if those count toward any of the bigger contests or if thats totally separate

anyway just curious what the contesting crowd thinks. dont want to embarrass myself on the air but also kind of excited to try it

CQ WW is honestly a great one to jump into even as a newcomer, the bands are absolutely packed that weekend and you'll have no trouble finding stations to work. the scoring can look confusing at first but basically each contact gives you points and the DXCC zones count as multipliers so working new zones is where the big score jumps come from. dont stress about optimizing your score the first time, just run search and pounce, meaning tune around and call stations rather than trying to hold a frequency and run people, way less pressure that way.

your 7300 and G5RV combo is totally fine for a first contest effort. 10 and 15 meters tend to be the money bands during CQ WW when propagation cooperates. just make sure you have N1MM or some logging software set up before the weekend because logging on paper gets old fast and the software handles the dupe checking and multiplier tracking automatically.

SOTA is its own separate thing by the way, totally different program, its about activating summits and the contacts you make count toward the SOTA database not toward CQ WW. though some people do SOTA activations during contests just for fun and count the contacts in both systems if the rules allow it

yeah jump in, worst case you make a few contacts and learn a ton. i remember my first CQ WW i had no idea what i was doing and just kept calling CQ contest and people answered which was kind of surreal honestly. the exchange for WW SSB is signal report and CQ zone so its pretty simple to get the hang of once you do it a few times.

ARRL Sweepstakes is also coming up in november and thats a US/Canada only contest which some people find less overwhelming than WW since you're not dealing with the whole world piling on. might be worth looking at that one too
