confused about LoTW vs eQSL vs actual cards — whats the point of all of them

 Loading...

ok so ive been licensed about 8 months now and ive been making contacts pretty regularly but the whole QSL confirmation thing has me completely turned around. like i understand the basic idea — you confirm the contact happened — but i dont understand why there are so many different ways to do it and which ones actually count for awards and stuff.

i signed up for LoTW because i kept seeing people mention it but the whole certificate thing took me a while to figure out and honestly im still not 100% sure i set it up right. then someone at my club mentioned eQSL and said some people use that instead but some people look down on it? and then of course there are actual physical cards which i think look really cool but seem like a lot of work and postage.

do i need all three or can i just pick one and stick with it. and if i want to go for DXCC someday does LoTW handle that or do i need paper cards too. sorry if this is a dumb question i just cant find a clear answer anywhere that doesnt sound like it was written for someone who already knows everything

not a dumb question at all, this tripped up pretty much everyone when they were starting out. the short version is that LoTW is the one that matters most for ARRL awards like DXCC and WAS — the ARRL runs it and they accept LoTW confirmations directly for those. eQSL is a separate system that some people like but the ARRL doesnt accept it for their major awards, though there are some other awards programs that do take it.

physical cards are still a thing and honestly a lot of DX stations still prefer them or even require them for certain awards. some rare DXpeditions will only confirm by paper card through their QSL manager. so depending on what you want to chase eventually you might end up using all three. but if youre just getting started and want to work toward DXCC someday, get LoTW working correctly first and make sure the other station is uploading too — when both sides upload a matching contact it confirms automatically and credits to your account. its actually pretty slick once you get past the setup.

the certificate stuff in LoTW is annoying to set up i wont lie, but once its done its done. if you think you set it up right and youre seeing your logs upload without errors youre probably fine.

i was in the same boat about a year ago honestly. what finally made it click for me was realizing they kind of serve different communities. LoTW is the serious award chaser system, eQSL is more casual and has some neat digital card designs people actually put effort into, and paper cards are just... kind of a tradition that a lot of operators genuinely enjoy. i have a whole box of cards i've gotten from people all over the world and i like flipping through them.

dont stress too much about having all three perfect right away. get LoTW sorted, maybe sign up for eQSL too since its free and easy, and if someone sends you a paper card just enjoy it. you can always send cards through the bureau which is way cheaper than direct mail if you eventually want to do that side of things too.
