when is it ok to jump into a net if you missed check-in?

 Loading...

so i've been checking into our local 2m net for a few months now and last week i missed the formal check-in window because i got home late from work. the net was still going on when i tuned in, people were still having roundtable conversations and stuff, and i wasnt sure if it was okay to just key up and say hey i missed check-in can i still join or if that would be like interrupting the whole flow and annoying the net control.

i ended up just listening which was fine but i kinda wanted to participate. is there a standard way to handle this? i know different nets do things differently but just curious what you all do. i dont want to be that guy who doesnt know the unwritten rules lol

totally fine to jump in late on most casual nets, the net control will usually appreciate you saying something like your callsign followed by "late check-in" or "traffic only" depending on what the net format is. just wait for a pause and key up with your call, a decent NCS will work you in. ive been running our wednesday night net for going on six years now and honestly late check-ins happen all the time, nobody thinks anything of it.

some more formal nets or traffic nets have stricter rules about this but a general 2m ragchew or info net is pretty relaxed. worst case the NCS says hey we already closed check-ins, but thats rare. most people just want more participation not less.

yeah i had the same question when i was starting out. i just listened for a while too but eventually worked up the nerve to do a late check-in and it was totally fine. the net control guy on our repeater actually said welcome glad you could join us or something like that. i think as long as your not stepping on someone mid-sentence its all good
