confused about where exactly i can operate on 40m as a general

ok so i just upgraded to general a few weeks ago and im still trying to figure out where i can actually transmit. like i know i have more privileges now but the band plan stuff is confusing me. specifically on 40 meters. i see people talking about not operating too close to the band edge and i dont really understand why that matters as long as youre within your allocation? also whats the difference between the actual FCC allocation and the ARRL band plan because sometimes they dont seem to match up. sorry if this is a dumb question i just dont want to accidentally transmit somewhere i shouldnt be

not a dumb question at all, this trips up a lot of new generals. so the short version is the FCC allocation is the legal part, that's what part 97 actually says you can use. the ARRL band plan is more of a gentlemens agreement on top of that, it's not law but most operators follow it to keep things organized. on 40m as a general you can do phone from 7.175 to 7.300 MHz, that's your legal range.

the band edge thing is important because your signal has a certain bandwidth. if you're running SSB and you set your dial to say 7.299 you might actually have audio components pushing above 7.300 which would put you out of your allocation. most people say stay at least 3 kHz inside the edge to be safe, so 7.297 or below on the upper end. some rigs also have calibration drift so theres a little buffer built in for that too. just something to keep in mind, the frequency on your display isnt always 100% spot on

yeah what he said about the bandwidth thing is the key part that took me a while to get. i was in the same boat when i upgraded and kept wondering why everyone was freaking out about being near 7.300. also worth knowing that 40m has some regional differences too, if you ever work DX stations they might be operating down around 7.100 or so which is in the phone segment for ITU region 1 but thats CW only for us here in the US. so sometimes you'll hear them but cant really call back on the same freq, you work them split. anyway dont stress too much about it, just stay a few kHz inside your edges and youll be fine
