first POTA activation tomorrow, any last minute tips?

 Loading...

so i finally got everything together and im heading out to K-4566 tomorrow morning for my first ever activation. ive been hunting for about 3 months now and figured it was time to actually get out there and do one myself. running a KX2 with a random wire antenna and a 9:1 unun, planning to set up at one of the picnic tables near the trailhead parking lot.

i know i need 10 QSOs to make it count but honestly im more nervous about the logging than the radio part. been using HAMRS on my phone which seems pretty straightforward but ive never done it in the field under pressure. do i need to upload to POTA.app the same day or is there a grace period? also not sure if i should spot myself or just hope people find me on the cluster. first time caller here so go easy on me lol

oh man youre gonna have a blast, first activation is super memorable. few things -- yes spot yourself, absolutely spot yourself, thats how the hunters find you. go to pota.app and use the self-spotting feature or just post to the POTA facebook group if youre somewhere with signal. without a spot you might sit there calling CQ for a long time and get discouraged.

on the logging, HAMRS is fine, i used it for my first dozen or so activations. dont stress about it being perfect in the field, you can clean up the log later. you have like 5 days i think to upload, definitely not same day required. just make sure youre getting callsign, band, mode and time in there. the time thing trips people up sometimes if you forget to set it to UTC before you go out.

also 10 QSOs sounds easy and usually is but if conditions are rough or youre on a less popular park it can take a while, just be patient and keep calling. good luck tomorrow
