first POTA activation tomorrow, any last minute tips?

 Loading...

so i finally got my general ticket a few months ago and ive been hunting POTA contacts for a while now just to get comfortable with hf, and tomorrow im doing my first actual activation at a state park about 45 minutes from the house. im bringing my ft-891 and a random wire antenna i've been practicing with in the backyard, planning to set up in a picnic area near the parking lot.

i know the basics i think — log everything, spot yourself on the POTA app, call CQ POTA on a clear frequency — but honestly i'm kinda nervous. what do i wish i'd known before my first activation? anything that catches people off guard? i have no idea how long it'll take to get my 10 contacts or if the bands will cooperate

congrats on going for it, the first one is always a little nerve wracking but honestly once you make that first contact it just clicks. couple things that helped me early on — dont stress about finding a perfectly clear frequency, just listen for a bit and if its mostly quiet give a shout. also spot yourself as soon as you start calling, the pile will come to you way faster than cold calling. i usually get my 10 within the first 20-30 minutes on 40m depending on the time of day.

one thing i wish someone told me: bring more battery than you think you need and maybe a camp chair because sometimes youll want to stay way longer than planned once the contacts are flowing. have fun with it, the POTA community is super welcoming especially to new activators

oh also check if your park has a K- reference AND maybe a state/county reference that overlaps, sometimes you can activate multiple references at once from the same spot which the hunters love. the POTA website should show you the boundaries. good luck tomorrow
