band conditions been weird lately or is it just me

 Loading...

so ive been noticing 15m has been doing some really strange things the past couple weeks. some days it opens up to europe around 1400 local and ill work a dozen stations no problem, other days its completely dead and i cant even hear a carrier. checked the solar flux and its been bouncing around a lot, yesterday it was up around 178 then dropped back to like 155 the next morning. not sure if thats normal variability or something is off with my setup.

also had a weird thing happen tuesday where 10m just randomly opened to japan for maybe 40 minutes around sunset, worked 4 JA stations which was awesome but then it just slammed shut. is that a greyline thing or more of a sporadic-E type opening? im still learning how all this propagation stuff works and i cant always tell whats causing what. any of the more experienced guys have a sense of whats been going on with the solar conditions lately?

yeah the flux has been all over the place, solar cycle 25 is really starting to ramp up but we're getting these short term fluctuations from active regions rotating in and out of view. that tuesday opening to JA sounds like it was probably a combination of things -- with flux that high you can get some legit F2 propagation at sunset especially on 10m, the greyline definitely helps but its not strictly a greyline phenomenon at these flux levels. sporadic-E is usually more summertime here in the northern hemisphere and tends to be shorter and more localized. what i'd suggest is bookmark spaceweather.com and also keep an eye on the DX cluster -- if you see a bunch of spots suddenly appearing for a particular path on 10 or 15 that usually means somethings opening up and you have maybe a short window to jump in. the 178 flux reading is actually pretty solid, anything above 150 and 10m gets interesting in my experience. dont get discouraged when it goes dead, thats just how it is right now, we're still building toward solar max.

those JA openings on 10m at sunset can be incredible when they happen. i worked like 15 JA stations in one of those short windows back in october and then nothing for a week. one thing i started doing is running VOACAP online before i even sit down at the radio, just plug in your location and where you want to work and it gives you a rough idea of what hours and bands might be usable. its not perfect but its saved me a lot of time sitting there listening to static. also the solar flux index isnt the only thing to watch, the Kp index matters a lot too -- even if flux is high a geomagnetic storm can wipe out the high bands pretty fast so if Kp goes above like 4 or 5 i usually drop down to 40 or 80 and work closer in stuff.
