thinking about going for Extra, is the theory stuff actually that hard?

 Loading...

so ive been a General for almost two years now and people keep telling me to just go ahead and get my Extra. i do want the full HF privileges obviously, those slices of 40m and 80m that i cant touch yet are kinda annoying especially during contests. but honestly the reason i havent done it yet is the theory sections of the exam scare me a little. like i passed my General without really understanding all the math and kind of just memorized enough to get through it.

the Extra pool has stuff about filter design and transmission line theory and amplifier classes and i looked at a few questions and some of them just made no sense to me at all. is this something where you just memorize the pool again or do you actually need to understand whats going on to pass it? i took electronics in high school like 15 years ago so its not totally foreign but im pretty rusty. how long did it take most people to prep for this thing

honestly for the exam itself you can get away with memorizing the pool like you did for General, the pool isnt that much bigger and there are tools like HamStudy that make it pretty manageable. took me about 6 weeks of studying maybe 20-30 minutes a day on my lunch break and i passed with a decent margin. that said i would actually recommend taking the time to understand at least the transmission line stuff and the filter theory because once you have full Extra privileges you'll actually encounter situations where knowing why something works matters, especially if you start building antennas or dealing with feedline matching issues. the exam is definitely a step up from General but its not like an engineering degree or anything, just takes some patience

I went for mine last spring and yeah the impedance and reactance questions tripped me up at first but after watching a few youtube videos on LC circuits it started clicking. the actual exam day wasnt bad at all. one thing i will say is dont sleep on the operating and regulations portions because there's more of that than people expect and its actually pretty easy points if you just read through the relevant parts of part 97. the theory stuff gets more attention in study guides but the regs questions are kind of free points if you put a little time in
