anyone else just sitting on 40m tonight not really doing much

 Loading...

so ive been parked on 7.230 for like the past hour just listening, had a few brief contacts but mostly just background noise and the occasional net traffic passing through. nothing exciting but honestly thats kind of what i needed tonight. sometimes its just nice to have the rig on and not really be hunting for anything specific you know

band seemed decent earlier around sunset, worked a guy in ohio without much trouble, but now its just kind of dead in my area. maybe propagation shifted or everyone went to bed. anyway just curious if anyone else does this — just kind of idles on a frequency without any real agenda

yeah i do this all the time, its basically how i decompress after work. 40m is my go-to for exactly that reason, always something going on even if its just background chatter. i had a solid hour last tuesday just listening to a roundtable somewhere in the midwest, didnt even key up once just kind of enjoyed hearing people talk about nothing

propagation on 40 has been a little weird lately i think, some nights its wide open and i'm hearing europe at weird hours, other nights its like the band just doesnt exist past 200 miles. solar stuff probably but i havent kept up with the flux numbers recently

thats pretty much how I got comfortable actually transmitting when I was new — just listening for a long time before ever calling CQ. 40m at night felt less intimidating than 20 somehow
