N1MM vs Log4OM for everyday logging — worth switching if I already do contests?

 Loading...

so ive been using N1MM pretty much since i got my ticket and it works great for contests, no complaints there, but for everyday logging its kind of a pain honestly. like i have to remember to switch modes and half the time im just doing casual rag chews or some POTA stuff and N1MM feels like overkill or at least not really designed for that use case.

a buddy of mine keeps telling me to look at Log4OM and from what i can tell it seems way more flexible for general logging, nice interface, integrates with stuff like QRZ and clublog without jumping through hoops. but here's my thing — i also run WSJT-X for FT8 and the integration between WSJT-X and N1MM is already set up and working. i got UDP logging going, dupes get flagged, the whole deal. i dont really want to break that.

so i guess my question is has anyone actually run Log4OM alongside WSJT-X and does that UDP pipe work the same way? and if you do contests do you just fire up N1MM for those events and let Log4OM handle everything else, or is that going to create a mess with duplicate logs you have to merge later. the ADIF import/export thing seems like it should work but ive heard horror stories about dupe QSOs and date/time mismatches when people try to merge logs from different programs.

not looking to overthink this i just want something that doesnt feel like im running a contest 24/7 when im just sitting down for an hour on 40m.

yeah i run pretty much exactly that setup, Log4OM for day to day and N1MM when a contest rolls around. the UDP stuff with WSJT-X works fine in Log4OM, took me maybe 20 minutes to configure and it just works. honestly the WSJT-X integration might actually be a little cleaner in Log4OM because of the way it handles the band/mode fields, N1MM sometimes does weird things with FT8 if you dont have the mode mapping set up exactly right.

the merge thing is real though and you do have to be careful. what i do is just export from N1MM after every contest as ADIF and import into Log4OM the same day while i remember. as long as you check the duplicate handling settings in Log4OM before you import it doesnt double up. i think by default it checks callsign plus date plus band and that catches basically everything. only time i had a problem was after a 48 hour contest where i was too tired to do it right away and then forgot for like two weeks and had a mess. so just do it the same day and youll be fine.

cant speak to Log4OM specifically but just wanted to say N1MM really isnt meant for casual logging and i think a lot of people try to force it into that role because theyve already learned it. ive seen guys run like three different logging programs depending on what theyre doing and honestly thats not as crazy as it sounds as long as your master log is in one place. ADIF is pretty portable these days.
