Component-level repair vs board replacement - cost analysis for modern transceivers

Working on a discussion with my local club about repair strategies for current-generation rigs. Component-level repair replaces defective parts rather than entire boards, with individual components costing only about 3% of board replacement cost. However, with increasing SMD density and specialized test equipment requirements, when does it make economic sense to attempt component-level work versus seeking factory service?

What factors do you consider when deciding repair approach for modern solid-state transceivers?

The key threshold is usually around $200-300 in parts cost. Below that, component-level makes sense if you have the skills and tools. Above that, or if it involves proprietary ASICs, send it to a specialist. Professional shops with complete parts inventories and experience can typically repair most rigs in 3-4 hours.

Factor in your learning goals too. I've "wasted" money on component-level repairs that could have been done cheaper elsewhere, but gained valuable troubleshooting experience. If it's your only rig and you need it back quickly, go professional.

Consider the rig's age and availability of service support. For discontinued models where factory boards aren't available, component-level repair might be your only option. I've kept several "boat anchor" rigs alive this way when replacement parts dried up.
