kind of embarrassed to ask this but when do you actually talk on a net

 Loading...

ok so i got my technician about 3 months ago and ive been listening to the local 2m net on tuesday nights mostly just to hear how it works. the net control will go through the checkins and sometimes ask if anyone has traffic or announcements and i never really know when its ok to just... jump in? like if i want to say something do i wait until they specifically call for announcements or can i check in and then say my thing when they acknowledge me?

also the one time i did check in i said my callsign and the net control acknowledged me and i just said "no traffic" and signed off but i wasnt sure if that was the right thing or if i was supposed to wait around. nobody said anything but i felt weird about it. been listening for a few more weeks since then and still not 100% sure on the flow of it

is there like an unwritten order of things i should know about or does it vary by net

dont be embarrassed at all, everyone goes through this and honestly its great that you were listening before jumping in, a lot of folks dont bother doing that. what you did was totally correct by the way -- check in, give your call, say no traffic, done. thats exactly right for a lot of nets.

the thing about when to add something is it does vary a bit by net but the general flow is you check in when they call for checkins, then when net control gets back to you thats your window. if you have an announcement you can just say it right then instead of "no traffic" -- something like "W1ABC, no traffic, but id like to make an announcement if thats ok" or on some nets you just say it. net control will usually guide you if youre doing something off.

some nets have a specific announcements period after all the checkins, in which case you hold it til then. best thing is just to keep listening and youll pick up the rhythm pretty fast. and dont worry about net control, theyre usually pretty patient with newer folks especially on a local club net

yeah what he said. i was in the same boat when i first got licensed and the net on our repeater was honestly how i learned most of this stuff just by lurking for a while first. one thing i'd add is that if you're ever unsure you can always just ask the net control after the net closes -- most of them are happy to chat and they genuinely dont mind explaining things. the couple times ive asked "hey did i do that right" afterwards i got really helpful answers and nobody made me feel dumb about it
