confused about LoTW vs eQSL vs paper cards — what does everyone actually use?

 Loading...

ok so ive been licensed about 8 months now and ive been trying to figure out this whole QSL confirmation thing and honestly its kind of overwhelming. like i understand the basic idea — you made a contact, you confirm it, cool — but i dont really understand why there are so many different systems and which ones actually matter for awards and stuff.

i signed up for LoTW because everyone said thats the one to use, and i get that its run by the ARRL and the confirmations are cryptographically signed or whatever so theyre considered more trustworthy. but then ive also seen people mention eQSL and i made an account there too and now i have confirmations in both places and i dont really know what to do with any of them. does it matter which one i upload to? do i have to upload to both?

also paper cards — i got a few in the mail from people and they look really cool honestly, i can see why people like them. but i havent sent any out yet because i wasnt sure about the process. do you just mail them directly to the other person or does it go through a bureau or something? i looked up bureau and now im even more confused about that whole thing lol. any help appreciated, been sitting on this question for a while

ha yeah its a bit of a rabbit hole at first but once it clicks it makes sense. so basically LoTW is the gold standard for most ARRL awards like DXCC — those confirmations have actual weight because you have to get a certificate from the ARRL to upload to it, so theres some accountability. eQSL is more casual, some awards accept it but not the big ones typically. i personally upload to both just because why not, takes like two minutes extra in my logging software.

for paper cards — you can definitely mail direct to the other op if you have their address, which you can sometimes find on QRZ. or you can go through the bureau which is basically a forwarding system run by ARRL and other organizations where you send a bunch of cards at once and they sort and distribute them. its cheaper if you work a lot of DX since international postage adds up fast. downside is bureau cards can take months or even over a year to arrive sometimes, i got one last spring that was postmarked 14 months prior. for domestic contacts a lot of people just mail direct or skip paper entirely honestly.

dont stress too much about it at this point, get your LoTW uploads consistent and that'll serve you well for any awards you chase later on

was in the same boat not too long ago. what helped me was just picking one thing and sticking with it for a while — i focused on LoTW first since thats what counts for DXCC and honestly once you get the certificate setup done and your logging software talking to it its pretty painless. i use WSJT-X and it uploads automatically after each FT8 session which is nice.

the paper cards thing i actually really enjoy, theres something satisfying about getting one in the mail even if it doesnt count for much officially. i ordered some custom cards from a print shop and ive been mailing a few out here and there for memorable contacts. not going to mail one for every QSO obviously but for my first DX contact or first new entity i like having the physical card
