first WWFF activation went better than expected, few questions though

 Loading...

so i finally did my first WWFF activation last weekend at a state forest near me and honestly it went way better than i expected. got about 34 QSOs over a couple hours which i think is enough to count the reference, but i have a few things i wasnt sure about after the fact.

first thing is logging — i was using paper in the field and then transferred everything to ADIF later. does the log need anything special for WWFF or is just the normal fields fine? i put the reference number in the notes field but i wasnt sure if thats the right place or if there's a specific field for it.

second thing, and this is probably a dumb question, but do the hunters need to specifically know youre doing WWFF to count it for their own awards or can they just log it as a regular contact? i had a few people call me who clearly just heard me calling CQ and didnt mention WWFF at all, wondering if those still count toward the reference total on my end at least.

also the spot on wwff.us didnt seem to work the first time i tried it from my phone, ended up just using pota spot which people seemed to find anyway. is that normal or was i doing something wrong with the wwff spotting

congrats on the first activation, 34 QSOs is solid especially if conditions werent great. on the logging question — the SIG and SIG_INFO fields in ADIF are really what you want for WWFF, SIG would be WWFF and SIG_INFO gets the actual reference like KFF-1234 or whatever country prefix you're in. some logging software handles this automatically if you set up a WWFF activity but if youre doing it manually just make sure those fields are there before you upload to the WWFF database.

for the hunters, they dont have to know its a WWFF activation for your count to be valid. your QSO total is your QSO total regardless of whether the other station is actively hunting. where it matters is on their end — they need the reference logged correctly to claim the contact for their own awards. but plenty of people just stumble onto an activation frequency and work you without knowing, happens all the time and those count just fine for the 44 minimum.

the spotting thing ive had mixed results with the wwff site from mobile too, using parksnpeaks or pota spots as backup is totally reasonable and a lot of hunters watch those anyway

oh man i remember being confused about basically all of this same stuff on my first one lol. i actually uploaded my log wrong twice before i figured out the ADIF fields thing. one tip — if you use HAMRS or Fast Log Entry in the field they both have WWFF/POTA modes built in and it saves you the headache of fixing the log later. i do paper backup too but having the fields right from the start is way easier.
