so ive had my TS-590SG for going on 6 years now and honestly it's been a great radio, no real complaints. but ive been eyeing the IC-7300 for a while just because the waterfall display would be nice and a few guys at the club swear by it. not really sure if theres a meaningful difference in receive performance or if im just GASing at this point.

my main thing is i do mostly 40 and 80m SSB, some digital on 20m (ft8 mostly), and occasionally mess around on 160 when the antenna cooperates. the 590 handles all of that fine but i dunno, sometimes i feel like im missing something not having the spectrum display. anyone made a similar switch or gone the other direction? also open to hearing about the 7610 or the new kenwoods but id rather not spend 3k if i dont have to

honestly the 7300 is a fantastic radio for what you're describing but I wouldn't say the receive is dramatically better than the 590SG in a direct comparison. the roofing filters on the kenwood are really solid and a lot of contesters actually preferred it for that reason for years. the waterfall though — that really does change how you operate, not gonna lie. i was skeptical too but once you can see a pile-up forming on 20m or watch the band come alive in the evening its hard to go back to just a meter.

if your 590 is working fine and you're not having any issues I'd say save the money unless you find a good deal on a used 7300. they hold value pretty well so you wouldnt lose much if you decided to sell it later either. i picked mine up used for around $750 a couple years back and that felt like the right price to take the plunge without feeling stupid about it.

went from a 7300 to a 7610 last year and the difference on a crowded 40m night is noticeable, the dual watch and better roofing filters make a real difference when thigns get busy. but for casual ssb and ft8 the 7300 is honestly more than enough and the interface is really intuitive. the 590 is no slouch either though so yeah probably just GAS lol
