okay so ive been trying to get Winlink going for a few weeks now and i think im close but there's a few things i just cant wrap my head around. running Winlink Express on a windows 10 box, have a Signalink USB hooked up to my IC-7300, mostly planning to use VHF for local RMS connections since im in a suburban area and there's a few gateways within range according to the map on the winlink site.

the part im stuck on is the actual message handling workflow. like i get the basics — you compose a message, connect to an RMS, it forwards to the internet. but what happens if i'm in the middle of sending and the link drops? does it just queue and retry or does it lose everything? also im seeing options for both Packet and VARA FM and i dont know which one to use for VHF. ive read that VARA FM is faster but i already have the Signalink set up for packet so i dont really want to mess with levels again if i dont have to.

also — and this is probably a dumb question — if i want to set up my OWN RMS gateway someday, is that something you basically have to be an extra class for or can any general do it? i know there's a whole winlink.org approval process but i dont know what the RF requirements look like on the operator side.

the message handling is actually pretty solid — if the link drops mid-transfer Winlink Express will just hold whatever didnt get through and you can reconnect and resume. it's not like email over smtp where a failed connection can leave things in a weird state. the RMS basically acts as a store-and-forward node so your message sits there until it gets acknowledged both ways. you'll see the status in the session log window which is worth watching when you're learning the flow.

on the VARA FM vs Packet question, honestly just try VARA FM. the free version is throttled to like 1200 bps or something in that range but it's still usually better than AX.25 packet in real conditions because of how it handles multipath and noise. and your Signalink levels probably wont need much tweaking going from packet to VARA FM on VHF — the audio levels going in are the same deal, just the modem software changes. i went through this same thing last year and spent way too long being precious about not changing my setup. just do it.

as for running an RMS gateway, any licensed ham can do it, general or extra, no restriction there. the winlink.org sysop registration is pretty straightforward, you just fill out the form and agree to keep the gateway running reasonably consistently. the trickier part is making sure your station is set up to be unattended legally under part 97 which means you need to have thought through your control operator situation. most people running VHF gateways just leave a TNC or soundcard setup running and log in remotely if something breaks.

yeah VARA FM is the way to go if you have a choice. i was running plain old 1200 baud packet for like two years on my local RMS connects and then switched and the speed difference on longer messages is pretty noticeable. the paid VARA FM license is like 69 euros or something and if you're gonna use this regularly its probably worth it but the free version works fine for occasional use.

one thing that tripped me up early on was the channel selector in Winlink Express — make sure you're actually pointed at the right frequency for your local RMS gateways and that the mode matches what the gateway is advertising. i wasted like an hour once because i was trying to connect VARA FM to a gateway that was only running packet. the winlink RMS list on rf.winlink.org shows you exactly what modes each gateway supports so that's worth bookmarking.
