APRS not showing my position on aprs.fi — beacon going out but nothing showing up

 Loading...

so ive been messing with this for like three days now and im losing my mind a little. i've got a TM-D710G set up in the truck with a mag mount on the roof, path is set to WIDE1-1,WIDE2-1 and i can hear the beacon transmitting, the TX light flashes every two minutes like its supposed to. but when i go to aprs.fi and search my callsign theres just nothing there. tried with and without the SSID and still nothing.

the radio is on 144.390 which is correct for north america, and i have the internal TNC enabled. not using a separate TNC or anything. i wonder if the path is wrong or maybe the symbol isnt set right, but i feel like that wouldnt stop it from showing up at all? like even a misformatted packet usually shows up as something weird rather than not at all.

anyone run into this before, is there something obvious im missing

first thing i'd check is whether any nearby digipeaters are actually hearing you. aprs.fi not showing anything usually means the packet isnt getting into the network at all, not a display issue. if you can, try running APRSIS32 or even just a cheap RTL-SDR to monitor 144.390 and see if your own packets are appearing on the waterfall and getting decoded. that'll tell you real quick if the radio is actually putting out a valid packet or just keying up with garbage.

also double check your MYCALL is set correctly in the TNC settings — the D710 has separate call settings for voice and packet and its easy to have one right and the other blank or set to the factory default. ive seen that trip people up more than once.

had almost the exact same problem last year, turned out my audio levels between the radio and TNC were way off and the packets were malformed. even though it sounded like it was transmitting fine. the D710 internal TNC shouldnt have that issue since its all integrated but worth checking the packet path format too — some older digipeaters in certain areas dont handle the WIDE2 path well depending on firmware. not saying thats it but if youre in a rural area with older infrastructure it can be weird.

also is your GPS actually locked? if the radio doesnt have a valid fix it might be sending a null position or just not beaconing at all even if the TX light is doing something.
