I keep hearing about the "exclusive" Extra class frequency segments, but looking at the band plans, it seems like pretty narrow slices. On 20 meters, Extras get 14.000-14.150 MHz while Generals start at 14.225 MHz - that's only a 75 kHz difference.

For those who upgraded to Extra, do you actually use those exclusive segments regularly?

• Is there noticeably less QRM in the Extra portions?
• Better DX activity down there?
• Worth the study effort just for band space?

Those "narrow slices" make a huge difference during contests and DX pileups! The Extra segments on 40 and 80 meters especially are where the serious DXers hang out. Less crowded and better propagation characteristics too.

From a contesting perspective, absolutely worth it. The Extra class CW segments (especially 7.000-7.125 on 40m) are prime real estate during major contests. You'll work stations there that never venture into the General portions.

Beyond just frequency access, the knowledge gained studying for Extra really helps with antenna modeling, RF design, and troubleshooting. The privileges are nice but the education is the real value. Plus you can finally VE for all three license levels!
