so ive been chasing 3D2/R for a few weeks now and honestly getting nowhere, just getting stepped on constantly or the DX just never seems to come back to me even when i think im in the right spot. been licensed about 6 years so its not like im brand new to this but pileups specifically have always been my weak point.

anyway last weekend something finally clicked. i stopped trying to transmit right when the DX finished — everyone does that, thats the problem. i started waiting maybe half a beat, like just a fraction of a second after the crowd jumps in, then i keyed up. and i also started really listening to where the DX was pulling from in the split. he was consistently coming back to stations about 2 kHz up from where the bulk of the pileup was sitting so i just parked there and waited my turn basically.

running about 500w into a 4el yagi at 45ft so not a pistol station but not a big gun either. i think the timing thing honestly made more difference than anything power-related. curious if anyone else has had luck with specific techniques or if its just always going to be a chaos lottery

yeah the split listening thing is huge and most people never bother to actually study where the DX is picking up. they just throw their call in the middle of the pack and wonder why nothing happens. ive watched guys run 1500w and a beam and still not crack a pileup because they're transmitting exactly where 400 other people are.

the timing delay trick works too, i call it the 'half beat' method in my head, never heard anyone else describe it that way but it makes sense — you're essentially finding a small gap in the noise floor right after the initial surge. another thing that helped me was shortening my callsign transmission when conditions are decent. if the band is clean i'll just send my suffix a couple times instead of the full call, easier for the DX op to pull out of the mess. obivously that depends on how unique your suffix is though, if you're a K1AB type you might get confused with others.

the frustrating part is theres no formula, sometimes you do everything right and still get skunked for a whole session then crack it on the first try the next day with the same exact approach

honestly im still trying to figure all this out. been chasing my first 100 entities and pileups are just intimidating to me. i didnt even realize you were supposed to listen to the split that carefully, i thought you just find where it says to transmit and go. gonna try paying more attention to where he's actually coming back from, that makes a lot of sense when you think about it
