New General here (KE4XYZ) and I just got my vanity application dismissed by the FCC. I applied for W4ABC, which I checked was available on RadioQTH. The dismissal letter says "call sign not available for assignment" but gives no other details.

I'm confused because I did my research beforehand. Is there something I'm missing about the availability checking process? I really want to understand what went wrong so I don't waste another $35.

Even when a call sign doesn't appear in the FCC database, it may not be available for assignment. There are several reasons: pending applications filed the same day, reserved call signs, or calls in the two-year waiting period. Did you check the ULS for pending applications before filing?

This happened to me too when I was starting out. The vast majority of dismissals are because people request call signs that aren't actually available or are outside their license class. Make sure you're using multiple databases - AE7Q, RadioQTH, and the FCC ULS search. The $35 fee stings but it's a learning experience!

Welcome to the vanity game! The FCC should add code to ULS to catch these errors at the application stage but they don't. For Generals, stick to Group C and D call signs (1x3 and 2x3 formats). Also check if someone filed ahead of you - applications are processed by receipt date, not filing time.
