Hi all! I'm relatively new to CW (about 8 months) and just picked up my first contest logging software to try some of the smaller contests. I can send and receive in the range of 15 to 20 WPM and have been using my straight key so far, but I'd like to step up to an iambic paddle for contest work.

I've been reading about dual-lever paddles requiring 11% fewer strokes but also that contest winners tend to use single-lever paddles because it's more difficult to make mistakes. Budget is around $150-200. Any recommendations for a first paddle that won't break the bank but will grow with me as I improve?

For your first paddle, I'd suggest looking at a Bencher BY-1 or BY-2. I upgraded to a Bencher years ago and it's been rock solid. The BY-1 is single lever, BY-2 is dual - either will serve you well within your budget. Don't overthink it at your stage, just get comfortable with the keyer timing first.

I started with a Kent single paddle about 6 months ago and love it. Take it slow. Practice slow is the best advice I got. Try both single and dual lever to see which you like best - maybe visit a hamfest to test drive different models first.

For contesting or DXing, I'll steer you to a basic paddle and keyer combination because you can go much faster—much sooner. Used Vibroplex paddles are great value on the used market. Most modern transceivers only require an external paddle so you're already set up equipment-wise.
