bands have been really weird lately -- is it just me?

so ive been noticing 20m acting really strange the past couple weeks. some days it's absolutely dead, cant raise anyone in europe from the midwest no matter what i try, then randomly like tuesday afternoon it just opened up and i was working stations left and right into spain and portugal with no effort at all. been licensed for about 8 months so i honestly dont have a great baseline for what normal looks like.

been trying to follow the solar flux index stuff on the spaceweather sites but i dont totally understand how to read it in terms of what to actually expect on what bands. like i know higher is generally better but how high is high enough to bother trying 10m or 15m? and do geomagnetic conditions matter more than the flux number or is it both? im also trying to figure out when to even bother with 40m for DX vs just using it for local rag chews

anyway if anyone has good resources or just wants to explain how they personally use the solar data to decide what band to operate on id really appreciate it. feel like im kind of flying blind right now

totally normal to feel that way when youre starting out, the bands really do just behave like that sometimes and its kind of maddening until it clicks. the short version is solar flux index (SFI) above about 120 or so is when 10m starts getting genuinely interesting, below that its pretty hit or miss. 15m opens up a bit easier, maybe 100-110 and youll start seeing some decent propagation depending on your path and time of day. 20m is kind of the workhorse because it stays useful across a wider range of conditions.

the geomagnetic stuff -- the K index especially -- matters a lot too and honestly sometimes more than the flux number in the short term. when the K index spikes above 4 or 5 the higher latitude paths take a beating even if SFI looks great. i usually check DXmaps.com and pskreporter just to see where signals are actually landing in real time, way more useful than trying to predict it theoretically. just tune around and listen, thats still the best propagation tool there is honestly.

oh man 40m for DX is great but you really need to be at it around sunrise and sunset your local time, like the hour or two window around those times is when the magic happens for paths to europe or the pacific depending which direction you're working. i worked JA almost every morning last winter on 40 ssb around my local sunrise, almost like clockwork when conditions were even halfway decent. during the day though yeah its pretty much a local band, skip is too short for much else
