ok so ive been licensed for about 8 months now and i still feel weird about when to break out the NATO phonetics vs just saying letters normally. like if someone asks me to confirm my callsign do i always go full alpha bravo charlie or is that overkill sometimes. i was on a local 2m repeater last week and just said my call normally and the guy came back and asked me to say it again which made me feel dumb. but then ive heard other people on HF just rattle off letters without phonetics and nobody seems to care. is there like an actual rule or is it just feel-based. also i keep blanking on november vs november... wait i mean i keep mixing up november and november. ok i mean i mix up november and uniform sometimes when im nervous talking. does that get easier

yeah it definitely gets easier, i used to freeze up on X and Q every single time. foxtrot... no wait. anyway the general idea is you use phonetics whenever theres any chance of confusion, so weak signals, noisy bands, any time you're giving out your call for a log or during a contest. on a quiet local repeater with full quieting you can probably just say your call normally and be fine, but if there's any static or the guy just didn't catch it the first time, phonetics just makes sense. there's no hard rule written down somewhere that says you must always use them, it's more just what's practical. the more you do it the more it becomes automatic, like i don't even think about it now i just kind of switch into phonetic mode when conditions warrant it.

honestly on HF i pretty much always use phonetics for the callsign at least on first contact. too many times ive had a guy think my E was a B or whatever and then the whole QSO starts off with wrong info in his log. repeaters are more forgiving since the audio is usually cleaner but even then if someone asks you to repeat just go phonetic, saves the back and forth. november and uniform are annoying i agree, i still occasionally say november when i mean uniform if im tired lol. just drill them when youre driving or whatever, thats how i did it
