So i just passed my Technician exam last week and im finally starting to look at buying my first handheld. I thought itd be a simple decision but wow there are just so many choices and everyone seems to have a very strong opinion about which one is best.
I keep seeing the Baofeng UV-5R come up everywhere and the price is obviously hard to argue with, but then I see experienced hams kind of rolling their eyes at it and suggesting I get a Yaesu or Kenwood instead. I dont have a huge budget — probably 60-80 bucks max right now — so the Baofengs are obviously appealing but i dont want to buy junk either.
Mainly I just want something to get on the local repeater and maybe do some simplex with my buddy who also just got licensed. Is there something in that price range thats actually decent or should I just save up a bit more? Any thoughts from people who have actually used these things would be really helpful.
