so ive been getting more into DX chasing lately and i keep having to jump between my laptop and the radio which is kind of annoying. a buddy at our club mentioned there are apps that can pull cluster spots directly on your phone but i honestly dont even know where to start with that. i've been using DXwatch in the browser which works fine but its kind of clunky on mobile and half the time i miss a good opening because im fumbling around trying to filter by band.

im mostly on HF, usually 17 and 20 meters, and i have a pretty basic setup nothing fancy. just wondering if anyone has found a good app that ties into the spotting networks and maybe shows you alerts when something rare pops up. or does everyone just use the browser tools and i should stop being lazy about it. also im on android if that matters.

HamSphere and a couple others have tried to do this but honestly for cluster spots specifically the app i keep coming back to is DX Toolkit on android. its not the prettiest thing but it pulls from the telnet clusters directly and you can set it to notify you when spots come in matching your filter — like if you only want 17m or only want certain prefixes. takes a few minutes to get the settings right but once its dialed in its pretty solid.

QRZ also has a decent mobile site and their logbook stuff is pretty well integrated but their spot page is still kind of blah on a small screen. i usually have DX Toolkit open on my phone and then confirm on QRZ if i need to look up the entity or check if ive worked it before. that combo works well for me anyway. there's also HRD logbook if you're running that software, it has a built in bandscope/cluster view but thats more of a shack PC thing than a phone thing.

oh man i had the same problem when i first started chasing DX, was constantly refreshing DXwatch on my laptop like a crazy person lol. someone at a hamfest pointed me toward the telnet clusters and i didnt even realize you could just connect directly with a terminal if you wanted to, like telnet to a node and see the raw spots fly by which is kind of fun in a nerdy way but not practical when youre actually trying to work someone.

for android i think there was one called Ham DX Cluster or something like that, i dont remember the exact name but if you just search cluster in the play store a few pop up. the trick is finding one that lets you filter because otherwise its just a firehose of spots and you cant keep up
