So I finally got off my butt and did a proper WWFF activation at a local state park near me, been meaning to do one for about a year now after I kept seeing people post their logs on the WWFF website. Figured it couldnt be that hard right? Threw my KX2 in a backpack with a 40m end fed and just headed out Saturday morning.

Honestly it went pretty well overall, managed to get 44 QSOs in about 2.5 hours which I know barely counts as a proper activation but for a first attempt I was happy. Mostly 40m SSB with a few 20m contacts near the end when the band shifted. My question is around logging the reference — I was operating in what I believe is KFF-2847 but I honestly just grabbed that number off the WWFF finder map the night before and Im not 100% sure I verified it properly against the park boundaries. Does anyone know how strict they are about that? Like do they cross check coordinates or is it mostly on the honor system?

Also noticed a couple hunters calling me who seemed really eager for the contact, didnt realize there was that level of activity around WWFF. Kind of reminded me of POTA in that regard but the vibe felt a little different, maybe more relaxed? anyway would love to hear from folks who do this regularly

congrats on the first activation, 44 QSOs for a first time out is actually solid especially if you were just running SSB on one or two bands. dont stress too hard about the reference number thing — the WWFF system does ask you to self certify basically but its a good idea to double check against the official WWFF finder before you submit the log. if you go to the activator page you can pull up the reference and it usually has a map overlay or at least a description of the park boundaries. just compare that to where you were operating and youre probably fine. most state parks are big enough that if you were clearly inside the park you wont have any issues.

the hunter community for WWFF is pretty active, especially the folks chasing awards like the Flora Fauna Century Club or whatever its called. some of them are logging pretty seriously so they do appreciate when activators post their spots to the WWFF cluster or POTA spots app since apparently those cross over sometimes. makes a big difference for pile up size in my experience.

yeah WWFF has a slightly different feel than POTA even though theyre similar on the surface. I think part of it is the international scope — WWFF references exist all over the world so when you get a DX hunter calling in from Europe for your little state park its kind of a cool moment. I had a guy from Germany call me when I was activating a wildlife refuge in Oregon last spring and that made the whole trip worth it honestly.

on the boundary question I wouldnt lose sleep over it, just make sure for future ones you screenshot the reference map before you head out. some parks the boundaries are obvious, others are weirdly drawn and you can end up in a reference without even knowing there was one there. the WWFF finder app on your phone helps a lot for that if you havent already got it downloaded.
