ok so i just passed my general last month and got my sequential call which is fine but honestly its pretty ugly and long and i was looking into getting a vanity call instead. ive been reading the FCC ULS stuff and some old posts on here and im getting kind of contradictory info about how the whole thing actually works now.

from what i understand there used to be some kind of preference system where like extra class licensees got priority over generals during the application window, and certain groups like close relatives of silent keys could claim a call before it went general public. is that still a thing or did they change it? i keep seeing references to the old system and im not sure what still applies.

also is it literally just whoever submits first once a call becomes available, or is there still some kind of window period where multiple apps get batched together and then sorted by preference? i really dont want to go through the whole process and miss out because i didnt understand how the timing works. any help appreciated, been lurking here for a while and you all seem to know your stuff

yeah the preference system is still in place, they didnt get rid of it. basically when a callsign becomes available theres a 18 day filing window and all applications that come in during that window get processed together at the end — its not purely first come first served within that window. after the window closes the FCC sorts through them by preference order: first priority goes to close relatives claiming a silent key's call, then former holders trying to reclaim their own old call, then other applicants ranked by license class with extras at the top.

so if youre a general applying for a 1x2 or 2x1 format call you might be competing against extra class applicants and youll be lower in the preference order. doesnt mean you cant get it, just means if someone with a higher preference also applied for the same call during that window they get it first. for 2x3 calls the competition is usually a lot less fierce honestly, might be worth looking at those if you just want something cleaner than your sequential. AE3 something or whatever format fits your district.

the website RadioQTH dot net has a decent tool for checking call availability and seeing when calls are expected to be released, thats where i always start when helping new folks figure this out

went through this exact thing about a year ago when i upgraded to extra. i will say the 18 day window thing caught me off guard, i thought i had to like sit there and submit the second a call dropped. ended up being way less stressful than i expected once i realized how it actually worked. just submit your application through the FCC ULS portal during the window and wait. the fee is like $35 i think, or maybe it changed, worth double checking that before you start.

one thing nobody told me — make sure your current license info is completely up to date in ULS before you apply for a vanity. had a friend who had an old address on file and it caused some kind of delay with his application, nothing catastrophic but annoying. good luck with it, getting a call you actually like makes a surprisingly big difference
