so ive been trying to get Winlink Express working for a few weeks now and i think i finally have it mostly figured out but there's one part thats still tripping me up. im running it on VHF through a local RMS gateway about 12 miles away, using a TNC-Pi hooked up to my 2m rig. the connection goes through fine most of the time and i can send/receive messages but im not totally sure i understand how the message routing actually works on the backend.

like when i send an email to a regular non-ham address, does it go from my station to the RMS gateway, then from there to the CMS (the central message server thing), and then out to the internet? or does the gateway itself have internet access and just forwards it directly? i thought i understood this but then i read something that made me think the gateway is basically just a relay and all the real work happens at the CMS side. also does it matter which RMS i connect to or do they all sync up so my messages are available from any of them?

secondary question — when im operating in a more remote area without any nearby RMS gateways, whats the realistic option? HF winlink? ive messed with Vara HF a little but never actually made a successful connection that way. any advice appreciated, been at this longer than i want to admit

yeah you basically have it right. the RMS gateway is just a relay — it has an internet connection and when you connect to it over RF, it passes your session through to one of the CMS nodes. there are a handful of CMS servers geographically spread out and they all stay in sync so it genuinely doesnt matter which RMS you hit, your inbox follows you. if you connected through a gateway in your area yesterday and then someone replies, you can pick that message up through a completely different gateway today, no issues.

for the HF side — Vara HF is the way to go these days honestly, Winmor kind of fell out of favor. but you need a decent soundcard interface and your levels have to be dialed in or youre gonna have a bad time. pactor is obviously better performance wise but the modem costs a small fortune so most people dont bother unless they're doing serious emcomm or maritime stuff. if you can get Vara HF working on 20m or 40m you can hit a gateway pretty much anywhere in the country from most locations in the US.

just to add on to what the other guy said — when i was first getting into this i spent way too long trying to troubleshoot my VARA HF setup before i realized my audio output levels were way too hot and i was just splattering all over the place. the waterfall in VARA will show you if the signal looks right. took me forever to find the sweet spot on the soundcard gain.

also one thing nobody told me early on is that you really want to make sure your grid square is entered correctly in your station settings because that affects how you show up in the RMS proximity list and some emcomm groups actually check that stuff. probably not a big deal for casual use but worth setting right from the start.
