so ive been licensed about 8 months now (general class) and everyone keeps telling me i need to try a contest. CQ WW is apparently coming up and my elmer wont stop talking about it. i barely know what im doing on a normal day on 20m so the idea of jumping into something with like a million stations calling CQ all at once sounds... intimidating honestly.

i also keep seeing people mention ARRL Field Day but i thought that already happened this year? is there another one coming or do people just talk about it year round. and SOTA i kind of understand conceptually but i dont know if thats really a contest or more of a program thing.

anyway i guess my main question is — for someone who is still kinda fumbling around with logging and exchange formats and all that, which of these would be the least overwhelming to just dip my toes in. i have a modest setup, ic-7300 into a dipole at about 30 feet. nothing fancy but it works.

oh man i remember feeling exactly the same way my first fall as a general. honestly? just jump into CQ WW even if you only make like 10 contacts. the exchange is super simple — signal report and CQ zone, thats it. you dont have to go crazy, just tune around and work whoever you can hear calling CQ, dont worry about running a frequency yourself at first. the 7300 into a dipole will do fine for making contacts, maybe not winning anything but thats not the point your first time out.

Field Day happens every June, last full weekend, so yeah the next one is a ways off. but honestly Field Day is a great one for newer folks because there are usually club groups doing it and you can just show up and operate under someone elses callsign and get the feel for it without any pressure. worth looking into if your local club does it.

SOTA is definitely more of an activation/chasing program than a traditional contest. there are specific SOTA contest events throughout the year but the day to day SOTA stuff is more casual. still a ton of fun though if you like hiking at all.

CQ WW is wild if youve never experienced it, like genuinely the band just sounds completely different that weekend. i did my first one two years ago with almost the exact same setup you have and managed like 80 contacts which felt amazing at the time lol. just use n1mm or even the free version of logger32 and set up a simple log before the weekend so youre not fumbling with paper.

one thing nobody told me — work dupes early on, dont stress about whether youve worked that station before, just log it and sort it out later. most logging software flags it anyway.
