so ive been on SSB for about two years now and honestly my audio reports are all over the place. some guys tell me i sound great, others say im muffled or that theres this low hum they cant quite place. ive got an IC-7300 which supposedly has decent DSP onboard and i run a Heil PR-40 into it which everyone says is the gold standard mic for this kind of thing but i still get inconsistent reports.

my shack is in the basement and i wonder if thats part of it — concrete walls, some RF floating around from the feedlines running through the ceiling. ive got the mic gain set around 50-55% and the compression is on but only like 2-3 bars showing, i read somewhere you dont want to overdrive it. transmit bandwidth is set to 2.4k which seems standard. am i missing something obvious here or is this just one of those things where every station hears you differently based on their own rx setup

also noticed the hum gets worse when my monitor is on so maybe thats a ground loop thing? i dunno, been meaning to chase that down for a while. just curious what other people do to get consistently clean audio on SSB because it feels like black magic sometimes

the monitor hum is almost certainly a ground loop yeah, classic symptom. if you can borrow a hum eliminator or just try running the rig from a different outlet temporarily you'll probably hear it vanish. happened to me when i added a second screen to the shack desk, took me embarrassingly long to figure out what changed.

on the broader audio thing — the PR-40 is a great mic but its a large diaphragm condenser-ish dynamic and it picks up room acoustics way more than something like a desk mic with a tighter pattern. in a concrete basement you might actually be getting some weird reflections that smear the clarity. try draping a moving blanket behind your operating position when you're testing, sounds dumb but it works. also worth running through the IC-7300's built in scope in monitor mode while you transmit and watch the ALC — if that thing is slamming hard on voice peaks your compression might be working against you even at low settings.

honestly 2.4k transmit bandwidth is fine for most contacts but ive found bumping it to 2.8 or even 3.0 on 20m when conditions are decent makes a real difference in how natural you sound. the 2.4 setting cuts some of the upper mids that carry intelligibility. just something to experiment with, not a fix for the hum obviously but the audio quality thing is real.

mic placement matters more than people think too. the PR-40 is meant to be talked across not straight into, a lot of guys dont realize that and eat the mic which causes all kinds of plosives and proximity bass buildup. keep it maybe 4-6 inches out and slightly off axis and see if that cleans things up. your reports will probably get more consistent just from that alone.
