so ive been trying to get Winlink Express working for about two weeks now and im just about ready to throw the laptop out the window. background: i have a Signalink USB feeding into an IC-7300, running on 40m mostly because thats what my club recommended for emcomm purposes. got my callsign registered on winlink.org, downloaded the latest Winlink Express, set up a Vara HF session and it just... sits there. says connecting to RMS then times out. i can hear activity on the waterfall so the audio path seems fine, but nothing is actually happening.

checked the RMS list and theres a couple gateways within what should be reasonable range. tried the telnet session just to confirm my account works and that goes through fine so its not an account issue. i think its either my audio levels being wrong or maybe the dial frequency is off, i dont really know. anyone dealt with this before? also slightly confused about the difference between the RMS relay and a direct peer to peer session, feel like i might be confusing myself there too.

yeah the audio level thing bites everybody at least once. in Vara HF theres that little drive level indicator and you really want it sitting around 30-40% on transmit, not pegged. if the Signalink TX knob is cranked up youll overdrive the vara modem and it just wont decode properly on the other end. also double check that the IC-7300 isnt doing any compression or processing on the TX side — turn all that off, data mode should be clean passthrough basically.

for the dial frequency, Vara HF on 40m most people use around 7.101 or check the RMS list in Winlink Express itself, it shows the exact dial freqs for each gateway. the list can be a bit stale sometimes so if a gateway shows green but wont connect try the next one down the list. and yeah peer to peer is totally different, thats for connecting directly to another station without going through any gateway infrastructure, useful for field day or emcomm when internet is down but not what you want for normal message handling to the internet side.

one more thing — make sure your system clock is synced. sounds dumb but vara is pretty picky about timing and if your PC clock is off by more than a few seconds it can cause weird connection failures that look exactly like what youre describing. just run the windows time sync or use something like Meinberg NTP and see if that changes anything. fixed it for me after i wasted a whole afternoon on audio settings.
