so ive been licensed about 8 months now (general class) and i keep hearing people talk about CQ WW and field day and all these other events and honestly i have no idea where to begin. like i get the basic concept, you make contacts and log points, but theres so much i dont understand still. like what counts as a multiplier, do i need special software, can i just use my regular HF setup or do i need something fancier

a buddy at the local club mentioned SOTA too but that seems like a whole different thing? he said people chase activators and you can get points or something. i tried reading the rules on the ARRL site and my eyes kind of glazed over after a few paragraphs honestly

i think CQ WW SSB is coming up pretty soon and i kind of want to dip my toe in, even just for a few hours. my setup is a Yaesu FT-991A into a 40m dipole up about 25 feet. would that even be competitive or should i just watch this year and try next time

jump in, seriously. your 991A and that dipole will do just fine for your first time. nobody expects you to win your category in year one, the whole point is to get on and learn how it works. CQ WW SSB is one of the biggest weekends of the year and the bands will be absolutely packed so youll have no trouble finding signals to work

for software i'd say grab N1MM+ before the weekend, its free and most contesters use it. takes a little getting used to but theres youtube walkthroughs that are pretty decent. the multiplier thing will click once you start logging, basically each DXCC entity and each CQ zone you work on each band counts, so working Japan on both 15 and 20 is two mults not one

SOTA is its own rabbit hole and honestly kind of addicting but yeah separate thing entirely. worry about that after your first contest weekend. just get on Saturday morning, find a loud station, call them, log it. thats it. dont overthink it

Field Day is actually a great starting point if you havent done that yet — its technically more of an emergency preparedness exercise than a pure contest but it runs like one and clubs usually set up big multiop stations so you can just show up and get a feel for how contesting works without having to manage everything yourself. my club does it every June and we always have people there who have never touched HF before

for CQ WW though yeah just hop on. 25ft dipole is fine, ive worked Europeans on worse. the main thing is just learning the rhythm of it, 59 followed by the zone number, over and over. after like the first hour it becomes muscle memory
