ok so I just passed my technician exam last week and I'm super excited but I have kind of a dumb question. my grandfather was a ham back in the 70s and had a really cool 1x2 callsign in our area and I was wondering if I could apply for something similar or even the same call if its available. I've been reading the FCC ULS stuff and my head is spinning honestly.

from what I understand there's the sequential process where they just assign you the next available call in your district, and then there's the vanity process where you can request a specific one? but I'm not sure if I have to wait until my license actually shows up in the system before I can apply for vanity. right now I can see my CSCE but the license isnt in ULS yet. someone at the club said to wait 10 days but another guy said it could be faster now. just want to make sure I dont jump the gun and mess something up

congrats on passing the test. so yeah you basically have to wait until your license is actually in the ULS database before you can file for a vanity call, and what your club friend said about 10 days is a bit old school - these days it usually shows up within a day or two, sometimes even same day if you applied through a VEC that does electronic filing. just keep checking the ULS license search with your name until you see it pop up with your sequential callsign assigned.

once its there, you can go ahead and file the vanity application. the FCC charges like $35 for it now I think, or maybe its changed, worth double checking on their site. and heads up - if your grandfather's old call is available you can absolutely apply for it, but 1x2 calls are pretty sought after so there might be other applicants. the FCC has this whole lottery-style system when multiple people apply for the same call in the same application window. dont let that discourage you though, lots of people do get the call they want especially if its been sitting unused for a while

oh man I went through this exact same thing earlier this year. I kept refreshing ULS like every few hours waiting for my call to show up lol. mine took about 3 days. the vanity application process through the FCC website is actually not that bad once your license is in the system, just follow the steps in ULS and it walks you through it pretty well. good luck getting your grandfathers old call, thats really cool that you want to carry that on
