so i finally worked up the nerve to check into the county ARES net this morning, been listening for about three weeks just trying to get a feel for how it runs before jumping in. everything seemed fine, i gave my call when the net control asked for check-ins, got acknowledged, all good. but then later in the net when they were doing traffic i guess i keyed up at the wrong time and apparently stepped on someone? net control came back and said there was interference on frequency and i just froze up and didnt say anything because i wasnt sure if it was me or not.

so my question is, if you accidentally double with someone or cause interference, whats the right thing to do? should i have just said my call and apologized right then? i felt bad sitting there not knowing if i was the one who did it. also is there like a standard way nets handle that situation, i wasnt sure if i should wait and let net control sort it out or just speak up. dont want to make things worse by talking when i shouldnt be

oh dont stress about it too much, that happens to literally everyone at some point especially when youre new to a net. the honest answer is yeah, if you think you might have been the one doubling, just come back with your call and say something like "KD9XYZ, I may have caused that interference, my apologies" and net control will usually just say no problem and move on. most nets are pretty forgiving about this stuff, theyre not there to embarrass anyone.

the thing is, if nobody fesses up net control just has to move on anyway, so saying something actually helps them out and it shows youre paying attention. the nets ive run over the years, i always appreciated when someone owned up because at least then we knew what happened and could keep things moving. youre doing the right thing by listening first and learning the rhythm before checking in, thats more than most new folks do honestly

yeah i was in almost the exact same situation on my first net check-in lol. didnt know if i stepped on somebody or if it was just a radio thing. i just kind of sat there mortified for like five minutes. eventually i just asked on the local repeater after the net ended if anyone noticed and one of the regulars walked me through what i should have done. most people on these nets have been doing it forever so they're pretty used to new folks making little mistakes, nobody's gonna yell at you or anything
