so i finally upgraded to General last month and ive been thinking about applying for a vanity callsign. my current sequential call is kind of long and hard to say phonetically which gets annoying especially when im trying to do any voice work on HF. anyway i went to the FCC ULS website and honestly its a little confusing to navigate if you havent done it before.

from what i understand you submit an application and then there's like a 18 day window where other people can also apply for the same call, and then after that window closes they do some kind of lottery if multiple people applied? or does the first person to apply just get it? ive read conflicting things and the FCC docs are not exactly written for normal humans to understand.

also wondering if there are any gotchas i should know about before i submit. i already looked up the call i want on the FCC database and it shows as available but i want to make sure im not missing something. do i need to have had my license for a certain amount of time before i can apply for vanity?

the 18 day window thing is real — basically once you file, the FCC opens that call up and anyone else who wants it can also throw their hat in during those 18 days. if only you applied, you get it. if multiple people applied, it goes to whoever has the highest applicant preference based on a bunch of rules — like if you're a close relative of a former holder of that call that jumps you up in priority, otherwise among equals i believe it does go to the first application received within the window. honestly the details get a bit into the weeds.

no minimum time requirement to apply for a vanity as far as i know, as long as your license is in good standing. just make sure the call you want is actually available for your license class — some shorter calls (like 1x2 format calls) require Extra, so if youre General you cant grab those. the AE7Q website is way better than the raw FCC ULS for searching available calls and figuring out eligibility, seriously just use that instead.

went through this whole thing like six months ago. the ae7q site someone will probably mention is your best friend, i spent like an hour just browsing available calls in my district before i settled on one. the actual filing through ULS wasnt too bad once i figured out which form to use (its the 605 i think). biggest thing that tripped me up was making sure my mailing address in the system was current before i applied because i got paranoid about missing any correspondence lol. anyway mine came through no problem after the window closed, got a nice short 2x3 and im happy with it.
