wire dipole vs vertical for 40m — am i overthinking this

so ive been going back and forth on this for probably two months now and i need someone to just talk me off the ledge. currently running a pretty basic 40m dipole, inverted-V style, apex around 35 feet up on a fiberglass mast. it works, like it genuinely works fine, but ive been reading about verticals and now i cant stop thinking about low-angle radiation and dx and all that stuff.

the thing is my yard isnt huge. im in a suburban lot and ground radials are going to be a pain — i was thinking maybe 16 to 20 of them, maybe 30 feet long since i just dont have the room for quarter wave on 40. my neighbor is already giving me looks about the mast so i dont really want to put up a giant vertical and then have that conversation too.

mostly i work domestic stuff, some occasional dx when conditions are decent. not a serious dxer but i wouldnt say no to a nice contact either. is the vertical actually going to make a meaningful difference for my kind of operating or am i just going to go through all that work and end up with roughly the same thing

honestly for your situation i'd stick with the dipole. the vertical low-angle advantage is real but its really only meaningful when you have a serious radial system under it, like 60+ quarter wave radials is where you start seeing the textbook performance. 16-20 short ones on a suburban lot... you'll get something but it aint gonna blow your dipole away, especially not for domestic contacts where higher angle radiation is actually working in your favor anyway.

the inverted-V at 35 feet on 40m is a respectable antenna. if you want more dx capability without the radial headache, honestly look into what you could do with a sloper or even just reorienting the dipole broadside toward wherever you want to work. sometimes the answer is just tweak what you have rather than dig up your whole yard.

went through exacty this last year. put up a trap vertical thinking it would be this big upgrade and yeah the dx contacts went up a little bit but honestly not as much as i expected. the radial situation was a nightmare, my wife was not happy, and i ended up with mediocre ground because of the soil here which is basically clay over rock. took it down after about 6 months and went back to a fan dipole.

the one thing i will say is the vertical was noticeably quieter on receive in certain directions which was kind of nice. but for what you're describing, working domestic with some occasional dx, your inverted-V is probably fine. put the energy into a decent tuner or maybe try getting that apex a bit higher if you can.
