so i've been pretty frustrated with HF for the past few weeks, just dead quiet on most everything, and then yesterday afternoon i just happened to have the radio on while doing other stuff and 10 meters was absolutely wild. worked a bunch of stations in South America and even got a ZL2 in there which honestly shocked me because i haven't heard anything from that direction in ages.

checked the solar flux after and it was up around 180 or so, which is way higher than it's been lately. is that what caused it or is it just coincidence? i'm still trying to wrap my head around how all this propagation stuff actually works. like i get the basics — sunspots, ionosphere, blah blah — but i dont really understand why some days are great and others you cant even hear the beacon a few hundred miles away.

also noticed 12m had some life in it too, barely touched that band before. anyone else seeing this or was i just lucky with timing?

yeah 10m has been doing some interesting things lately, we're climbing toward the solar cycle peak so these openings are going to get more frequent and more intense over the next year or two probably. the flux index is a good general indicator but honestly the K index matters just as much — high solar flux is great but if there's been a geomagnetic storm and the K index is elevated, it can completely wipe out the higher bands even when flux looks good.

what i usually do is check the DX cluster in the morning and if i see a lot of spots on 10 and 12 to europe or across the pacific, i know something's cooking. propagation on 10m when conditions are right is almost magic, it's one of the reasons a lot of people who been around forever still love that band. a ZL2 from wherever you are is a real catch, that's not a fluke, you were reading the band right even if you didn't realize it.

omg same thing happened to me last week, i was just scanning around on 10m kind of not expecting anything and suddenly there were signals everywhere. im pretty new to hf so i wasn't even sure what i was hearing at first lol. ended up working like 6 or 7 countries in maybe 45 minutes which is more DX than i'd done in the previous month combined. definitely going to keep an eye on the solar flux numbers more now, didnt even know that was a thing you could track before reading this thread.
