so i finally worked up the nerve to check into the local tuesday night net, ive been licensed for about 4 months now and mostly just been listening but figured it was time to actually participate. anyway the net control called for check-ins and i keyed up and gave my call but i guess i was talking way too long because when i unkeyed there was this awkward silence and then the NCS just kind of moved on and i dont think my check-in actually went through properly. or maybe it did and i missed it, i honestly couldnt tell.

then later when they opened it up for comments i tried to reply to something someone said and i think i stepped on another station because i didnt wait long enough after the previous person finished. nobody said anything but i felt bad about it. is there like a standard amount of time you're supposed to wait before keying up? i feel like everyone else just knows this stuff instinctively and i'm still fumbling around. also does net control usually acknowledge every single check-in individually or do they sometimes just log you and move on?

don't sweat it, everybody does exactly this when they're starting out, myself included. the waiting thing is something you kind of develop a feel for over time but a general rule of thumb is to wait until you're sure the other person has completely finished and then pause maybe a beat or two before keying up. on repeaters there's also the courtesy tone to watch for if your local machine has one — that little beep after someone unkeys basically means the squelch tail is done and now it's safe to key up without stomping on them.

as for net control not acknowledging you, yeah sometimes they'll acknowledge every check-in and sometimes on a busy net they'll just log em all and read them back at the end of the roll call. depends on the net and the NCS operator. if you weren't sure whether you got in, most net controls are totally fine if you wait for a pause and ask something like "did you copy my check-in?" — totally normal thing to do and any decent NCS will just confirm or have you try again. just jump back in next week, the regulars on those nets are usually pretty friendly once they get to know your call.

oh man i did the exact same thing my first few times on a net lol. the stepping on people thing is rough because you genuinely cant tell if you caused the problem or if it was just two people keying up at the same time which happens all the time anyway. honestly most people on nets have been there and get it. the NCS on our local net actually told me once that he'd rather have nervous new hams fumbling through a check-in than not checking in at all so just keep showing up and it gets way easier pretty fast.
