finally broke a pileup on my own — some things that actually worked

so ive been chasing DX for about three years now and always struggled with pileups, like really bad. i'd just call and call and never get through and end up giving up frustrated. last weekend there was a pretty rare one active from a central african entity i wont name because im still not sure if the log is confirmed but i actually got through and wanted to share what finally clicked for me.

the big thing was listening way more before calling. sounds obvious but i mean really listening — figuring out where the DX was coming back, how far up or down in the split they were working, the rhythm of how they were picking calls. this particular op was clearly working up about 3-4 kHz and then occasionally jumping way up when the pileup got thick. once i figured that out i started placing my call maybe 1 kHz above where everyone else seemed to be hammering and it worked on like the third try.

also ran 100w into a vertical which honestly surprised me, i always assumed i needed an amp to have any shot. timing the call to end just as they finish their QRZ or the tail end of a previous QSO also seems to matter a lot. anyone else have techniques they've found actually work vs stuff that just sounds good in theory?

the listening thing is so underrated and most people just dont do it. ive watched guys at my club literally start calling before they even know where the DX is listening. like they just find the transmit freq and start blasting away. complete waste of time and also just bad operating.

one thing that helped me a lot was learning to tail end properly — not just calling right after the QSO ends but actually overlapping with the very last dit or dah of the other stations final exchange. on CW especially that timing is everything. on SSB its a little different and honestly more chaotic, i find CW pileups way easier to crack because theres more structure to them.

the split placement thing you mentioned is real. a lot of guys just tune to 5 up because thats what the cluster says and then everyone is stacked on top of each other. moving outside that by even 500 hz can make a huge difference. i also find that on 17 and 15m conditions sometimes do the work for you — if you happen to have a better path at that moment you'll just punch through regardless of technique.

yeah timing is probably 80% of it honestly. ive also heard people say to try calling with just your suffix during a really thick pileup, especially if the DX op seems to be picking up partials. not sure if thats universally good advice or just situational but it worked for me once on a pretty decent DXpedition from the pacific a couple years back.

the vertical thing doesnt surprise me at all. a good vertical with a proper ground system or elevated radials can be surprisingly competitive, especially on the lower bands where low angle radiation matters and a lot of directional antennas actually have worse performance than people think once you account for their takeoff angle on a real lot. its way more about timing and operating skill for SSB pileups in my experience, beyond maybe needing enough power to actually be heard over the noise floor on their end.
