ok so ive had my technician for about 8 months now and i mostly just listen to the local 2m net on tuesday nights. i know the net control calls around and people check in but im always kind of frozen when it gets to where i think i should say something. like do i just say my callsign? do i wait for them to ask? last week i almost keyed up and then just... didnt. felt dumb afterward.

also is there a wrong way to check in? i dont want to be that guy who does something weird and everyone remembers it forever lol. the net control seems really experienced and i dont want to bother him with questions mid-net either. any advice from people who actually do this regularly would be great

oh man i remember that exact feeling, i sat on my local net for like three months before i actually checked in the first time. honestly the best thing i can tell you is that net control is expecting you, thats literally what theyre there for. when they open it up for check-ins you just key up and say your callsign clearly, phonetics if the repeater is noisy or if its your first time so they get it right in the log. something like "W4XYZ, first check-in" works totally fine and most net controls will actually make a little thing of welcoming you which is nice.

the one thing that trips new people up is waiting too long after keying the mic before talking -- the repeater needs a second to come up so give it a beat then say your call. other than that theres really not much to it. nobody is going to remember a stumble, and even if you step on someone by accident net control will just sort it out. you got this, just do it next tuesday

yeah what he said. i was SO nervous my first check in i forgot my own callsign halfway through, had to start over. net control just laughed and said welcome. these guys do it every week they've seen everything, dont stress it
