confused about LoTW vs eQSL vs paper cards — do i need all three?

okay so ive been licensed for about 8 months now and ive been making contacts but i havent really figured out the whole QSL thing yet and honestly its kind of overwhelming. like i understand the basic idea that you confirm the contact with the other person but there seem to be like three different ways to do it and i cant tell if i need to do all of them or just pick one or what.

so i signed up for LoTW because everyone said to do that first and i uploaded a few logs but i dont really understand how the confirmations work — like do both people have to upload for it to count? and then theres eQSL which seems easier to use but some people say it doesnt count for awards? and then theres actual physical cards which look really cool but i have no idea how to even start with that, do i just design one and print it and mail it? do i need a QSL manager or is that only for DX stations?

im not trying to chase any specific award right now i just want to do it right from the start so i dont have to go back and fix everything later. any advice on where to actually begin would be really helpful, or even just which one matters most to start with

yeah both people have to upload to LoTW for the confirmation to show up, thats the part that trips everyone up at first. so you might have 500 QSOs in your log but only see like 200 confirmed on LoTW because the other station hasnt uploaded yet or maybe never will. its kind of a waiting game sometimes.

for awards like DXCC through the ARRL, LoTW is really the gold standard and eQSL credits dont count toward that one. but eQSL has its own awards and some people really like it, and honestly the interface is a lot friendlier when you're starting out. i use both personally, just upload to both and you cover more bases.

physical cards are totally worth doing in my opinion even if they're not strictly necessary. you can design one pretty cheaply through places like UX5UO print service or some of the club bureau options. you dont need a manager unless you're running a rare DX entity or something — for a regular US ham you just exchange cards directly or through the ARRL bureau which is really cheap. the bureau is slow though, like months sometimes, so dont expect quick turnaround.

honestly just start with LoTW since you already have it set up, keep logging everything, and add the others when you feel like it. you wont regret having the paper cards eventually, theres something nice about a physical confirmation sitting on your desk

same boat as you like 6 months ago lol. what finally made it click for me was just thinking of them as separate things that happen to overlap. LoTW is basically the official one for ARRL awards, eQSL is more casual and social almost, and paper cards are just... fun? i started getting cards back in the mail and now i kind of love it even though it seemed pointless at first.

the one thing nobody told me is that for LoTW you need the TQSL software and you have to get a certificate tied to your callsign and it takes a few days to get approved. if you already did that part youre good, but if you skipped it that might be why confirmations arent showing up
