so ive been trying to get Winlink going for about two weeks now and i keep hitting walls. running Winlink Express on a windows 10 machine, got a signalink USB hooked up to my IC-7300, using Vara HF as the modem. i can hear activity on the frequency, waterfall shows signals coming in, but every time i try to connect to an RMS gateway it just times out or gives me a 'no channel' error and moves on to the next one in the list.

i went through the setup wizard like three times. audio levels seem fine, the signalink TX light blinks when it transmits. i checked that my callsign and password are registered on the Winlink website. not sure what else to check at this point. is there something obvious im missing about how the RMS gateway selection works or how VARA negotiates the connection? i feel like im close but just missing something dumb

few things to check - first, when you say the TX light blinks, are you actually getting RF out? like have you verified with a wattmeter or at least seen the ALC move on the radio? signalink can blink and still have the audio level set wrong on either end. the drive level on the signalink itself and the mic gain on the IC-7300 both matter, and too much is as bad as too little with VARA, it's really picky about overdriven audio.

also the 'no channel' thing usually means the gateway heard you but the frequency was occupied or the timing was off. VARA HF specifically needs the dial frequency to match what the gateway is listening on, and a lot of people get tripped up because they forget to account for the USB offset. like if the gateway is listed at 14105.0 you need to actually be dialed to that exact frequency, VARA handles the rest internally. double check your frequency against the gateway list in the channel selector and make sure you're not accidentally on LSB instead of USB.

yeah what he said about the audio levels. i spent like a weekend on this exact problem last year. one thing that finally got me sorted was using the VARA FM calibration tool, oh wait you're on HF not FM. but VARA HF has a similar thing, there's an audio calibration in the VARA HF settings somewhere that lets you check input and output levels before you try to connect anything. run that first before anything else honestly.

also just a thought - have you tried connecting to a Telnet session first just to confirm your account is actually working and your messages are set up right? sometimes the issue is account side not RF side and it saves a lot of headache to rule that out. if telnet works fine then you know its definitely something with the RF path or the modem config
