okay so ive been trying to get Winlink Express working for probably two weeks now and im just not getting anywhere. background: im running a IC-7300 into a SignaLink USB, on HF, trying to connect to an RMS gateway for VARA HF. i can hear the gateway beacon just fine, the audio levels look right in the waterfall, i send the connect request and it just... times out. every time.

ive gone through the Winlink Express setup wizard like four times. the VARA modem software is registered (paid for it last month). my dial frequency is set to the center frequency minus the offset, pretty sure thats right anyway. RMS gateway shows as active on the winlink.org map when i check it. i just dont understand what im missing here.

is there something dumb i'm doing wrong with the audio routing or is this a known issue with the 7300 and SignaLink combo? also do i need to have my callsign registered somewhere specific before i can actually send mail through the system or does the first connection handle that?

the IC-7300 and SignaLink combo is actually a pretty common pairing and it usually works but there are a couple gotchas. first thing id check is whether you have the 7300 set to output audio on the USB port or the ACC jack -- if youre using the SignaLink you want the rear ACC port, not USB audio, otherwise your levels are gonna be all over the place. second, make sure the 7300 DATA mode is set up right, you want to be in USB-D or whatever icom calls it, and the mic gain through the data port should be turned way down, like 10-20%, let the SignaLink handle the level.

for the frequency thing -- VARA HF connects on USB so your dial frequency IS the suppressed carrier, not center. so if the gateway is listed as 14105.0 you just dial up 14105.0 in USB and let VARA put the tones where they go. some guys confuse this with packet where you sometimes have to offset. also worth checking your RMS gateway -- some of them have pretty short connect windows and if your timing is off or theres qrm on that frequency theyll just drop the handshake. try a couple different gateways in your region, the winlink map lets you filter by mode and distance.

callsign registration happens automatically on first successful connect, you dont have to pre-register anywhere.

had almost the exact same problem last year, turned out my firewall was blocking VARA from reaching out on the ports it needs for the telnet fallback. winlink tries a few different connection paths and if something is blocked it just silently fails and looks like a radio timeout. worth checking if you have any security software that might be interfering, even windows defender sometimes does weird stuff with new software.
