first WWFF activation went better than expected, some questions though

so i finally did my first WWFF activation last weekend at a local nature reserve near me, KFF-1847 if anyone knows it, and honestly it went way smoother than i expected. set up my buddipole in a little clearing near the trailhead and started calling on 14.244 and got a decent little pileup going after about 20 minutes which surprised me. ended up with 47 QSOs before the rain started coming in and i had to pack up early.

anyway i have some questions for people who do this regularly. first off, how strict are the rules about staying within the actual reference boundaries? i was pretty close to the edge of the park near the parking lot and i wasnt 100% sure if the lot itself counts or if you need to be inside the actual designated area. also do most people self-spot on the WWFF spotting network or wait for someone else to spot them? i felt weird self-spotting but i also noticed my rate really picked up after i finally did it.

and one more thing -- for the log submission, do you just upload an ADIF like normal or is there a specific format they want? the website wasnt super clear to me on that part. thanks in advance, glad i finally got off the bench and tried this

congrats on the first one, 47 contacts in the rain with a buddipole is pretty solid honestly. on the boundary question -- generally you need to be physically inside the protected area boundary, so yeah parking lots are usually iffy unless the lot is explicitly within the designated reference area. most of the bigger national parks the lot is inside the boundary but smaller local reserves it can vary. i'd check the reference details on the WWFF database, they sometimes have notes about what exactly the boundary covers.

self-spotting is totally normal and honestly expected. most activators do it, thats how people know to look for you. dont feel weird about it at all, nobody is going to think less of you for it. if you dont spot yourself you'll just be sitting there calling CQ into the void for way longer than necessary. for the log just an ADIF works fine, upload it to the WWFF logsearch and it processes pretty quickly. make sure your reference number is in there correctly and you should be good.

oh man KFF-1847 -- i think i actually worked you, i logged a station there Saturday afternoon. small world. i'm fairly new to chasing WWFF references and have been trying to get confirmations from as many different ones as i can. i was really happy when you popped up on the spotting network because i didnt have that one yet.

i cant help much with the log submission stuff since i'm on the chasing side not the activating side but i've been thinking about doing my first activation at a state park near me sometime this spring. posts like this help me figure out what to expect so thanks for writing it up
