  1. yeah the spot network thing confused me for a while too when i first started. took me a while to realize that a spot from three hours ago is basically useless unless its a dxpedition thats been on for days lol. one thing that helped me a lot was DX Toolkit on the phone, its pretty decent for getting alerts when something shows up on a band youre watching. not perfect but better than refreshing a webpage every five minutes. also if you havent tried the Reverse Beacon Network yet for CW its kind of amazing, its basically automated spotting from skimmers around the world so its a lot more reliable than human spots for finding who is actually transmitting right now. different vibe than FT8 stuff obviously but worth bookmarking even if you dont do CW much, just to see how it works.
  2. oh man i was in the same boat not that long ago. what helped me was just picking ONE net and committing to checking in every week until i got comfortable. i started with a 2m local repeater net and just listened for like three weeks before i actually checked in lol. felt way less scary after that. the special event thing threw me off too at first. theres a site called qrz.com that has a special events section and also if you follow some of the ham radio groups on facebook they usually post about upcoming ones. some of them are pretty cool, like parks on the air activations and stuff like that where people are operating portable from national parks and you can get credit for logging them
  3. the one that got me when i started was QRP, people would say they were running QRP and i thought it was a mode or something but its just low power operation, like 5 watts or less. theres a whole crowd of hams who are really into QRP and it becomes kind of its own thing. also QRN is natural static/noise as opposed to QRM which is man made interference, that one comes up a lot when the bands are noisy.
  4. Honest answer — the UV-5R will work fine for what you're describing, especially just getting started on local repeaters. The snobbery around them is partly justified and partly just old hams being old hams. The real issues with the cheap Baofengs are things like frequency accuracy being slightly off sometimes, the receive sensitivity isn't always great, and they can occasionally TX on weird frequencies if you're not careful with programming. For just hitting a local repeater and chatting though, most of that won't matter to you day one. That said, if you can stretch to something like the Yaesu FT-65 (not the FT-60, the newer one) or even a used FT-60 off eBay, you'll notice the audio is just... clearer. Like noticeably cleaner on receive. And they're built like tanks. I've had mine for probably 8 years and dropped it more times than I want to admit. Battery life is also genuinely better on the Japanese radios in my experience. If budget is real tight though, grab the UV-5R and use the savings toward your next license class. Gear matters less than getting on the air and actually operating.
  5. so ive been on FT8 for about a year now and yeah its great for working new entities and whatever but honestly after a while it starts to feel like youre just collecting grid squares and theres no actual... communication happening? like i know thats kind of the point but still anyway i stumbled onto JS8Call a few weeks back and the idea of it really appealed to me — same kind of weak signal encoding but you can actually type messages back and forth. set it up on 40m and managed a few QSOs but the band seemed pretty dead compared to what i see on FT8. maybe i was on the wrong frequencies or wrong time of day, i dunno. curious if anyone here uses it regularly and whether its worth sticking with or if its just kind of a niche thing that never really took off. also wondering how it compares sensitivity-wise to FT8 — i know FT8 is supposedly down around -20 something dB SNR which is pretty insane, does JS8 get anywhere close to that? for context im running an IC-7300 into a G5RV up about 30 feet, nothing fancy
  6. congrats on the first one, 47 contacts in the rain with a buddipole is pretty solid honestly. on the boundary question -- generally you need to be physically inside the protected area boundary, so yeah parking lots are usually iffy unless the lot is explicitly within the designated reference area. most of the bigger national parks the lot is inside the boundary but smaller local reserves it can vary. i'd check the reference details on the WWFF database, they sometimes have notes about what exactly the boundary covers. self-spotting is totally normal and honestly expected. most activators do it, thats how people know to look for you. dont feel weird about it at all, nobody is going to think less of you for it. if you dont spot yourself you'll just be sitting there calling CQ into the void for way longer than necessary. for the log just an ADIF works fine, upload it to the WWFF logsearch and it processes pretty quickly. make sure your reference number is in there correctly and you should be good.
  7. honestly the theory isn't as brutal as it looks at first. i was in the same boat, no engineering background, just a hobbyist who liked talking on the radio. what i did was go through the HamStudy site and just hammered the questions every day for like six weeks. some of the filter stuff i genuinely learned because it clicked after a while, and some of it i'll be honest i just memorized the answer pattern without fully understanding why. either way i passed and that was a few years ago now. the privileges thing, for me personally the biggest deal was 160m and being able to use more of 75/80m phone without worrying about where i was sitting. also the bottom of 20m where a lot of the DX hangs out, that was nice. if you mostly do digital it might matter less but there's definitely some Extra-only segments that see real activity depending on the band and time of day.
  8. honestly the jump from a v3 to the RSP1C was pretty noticeable for me on 40 and 80m during the evening when the band gets busy. the dongle just starts to fall apart when theres a strong broadcast station a few hundred kHz away, you get all kinds of intermod garbage showing up. the RSP1C handles that a lot cleaner. that said i do think your antenna is probably limiting you more than the dongle at this point, a 9:1 unun into a random longwire is fine but its also picking up all kinds of crud depending on where you live. id probably sort that out first before spending money on the radio end, but if you're going to upgrade anyway the RSP1C is solid and SDR++ works great with it once you get the driver situation squared away.
  9. so ive been listening on HF for a few weeks now and i keep hearing and seeing all these weird shorthand things and i honestly have no idea what half of them mean. like on PSK31 i see stuff like QTH and QRM and TNX and 73 and a bunch of others and i just sort of nod along lol. i looked some up but there's so many and some sources give slightly different meanings and its confusing. is there like a standard list or something i should just memorize? or does it come with time? also whats the difference between the Q codes and just regular ham abbreviations, are they different things or all the same
  10. same boat as you a while back lol. one thing that helped me was just downloading the actual part 97 PDF and ctrl+F searching for "Technician" — cuts through a lot of the noise. also the ARRL band plan chart is way more readable. dont overthink the power limits for now, just focus on knowing where you're allowed to be frequency wise first.

  13. room acoustics caught me off guard when i first started caring about this stuff. i was getting reports of this weird echo-y quality to my audio and i couldnt figure it out for weeks. turned out i had the mic pointed somewhat toward a flat wall about 3 feet away and was basically getting a tiny slap back. moved the whole setup around and it went away. sounds like a minor thing but on SSB where the bandwidth is already limited those kinds of artifacts really stand out. also one thing worth trying if you havent — record yourself using the monitor function on the 7300 or just loop it through an SDR nearby and listen critically. hearing yourself the way others hear you is kind of jarring the first time but its the fastest way to actually diagnose whats wrong instead of guessing.
  14. Getting ready for my Technician exam and wondering about practice test strategy. Need to score 74% (26 out of 35 questions correct) to pass, which seems doable. How many practice tests did you take before feeling confident? And should I focus on full 35-question exams or drill individual subelements where I'm weak? Currently scoring 80-85% on practice testsStruggling most with electrical principles and circuit componentsTest date is in two weeks
  15. the ALC jumping around on a dummy load is a pretty good clue honestly. on those rigs if the ALC line has a bad solder joint or a leaky cap in that feedback loop it'll throttle the output even when theres no reason to. theres a couple electrolytics near the ALC circuit on the RF unit board — i think its C1045 or somewhere around there, dont quote me on the exact number — that are known to go soft on older units. worth pulling them and measuring ESR if you have a meter for it rather than just checking capacitance. i chased a similar symptom on an 897 for forever and it turned out to be a cap that read fine on capacitance but had terrible ESR and was basically acting like a resistor at audio frequencies. also double check your PA bias voltage, theres a trimmer for that and if its drifted low youll get exactly what you're describing — everything looks alive but power is down across HF only.
  16. so i finally did my first POTA activation yesterday at a state park about 45 minutes from home. been planning it for like two months and of course the day i go out it's windy as heck and i forgot my antenna stakes so i ended up just kind of propping the end fed against a picnic table and a tree branch. not exactly textbook. managed to get 12 contacts on 40m with the KX2 before my phone battery died and i couldnt log anymore. i know some guys just write it on paper but i totally blanked and couldnt remember all the exchange info after a while. still counts as an activation i think since i got past 10 but man i was not prepared. next time im bringing a whole checklist taped to the radio bag or something.
  17. nice work getting it up, 14 gauge stranded is what i used on my first one too. the only thing id add is make sure your connections at the feedpoint are actually weatherproofed if its gonna stay up long term, i skipped that step once and had a totally weird SWR reading a few months later that turned out to just be corrosion at the solder joint. self fusing tape works great for wrapping the whole feedpoint area once youre happy with how it tunes.
  18. so its been a pretty slow week for me radio wise, been monitoring 40m for the past couple hours and barely heard anything worth calling into. got a couple of weak stations from somewhere in the midwest but the qsb was brutal and i lost em both before we even exchanged names. not complaining exactly just feels like one of those nights where the band is technically open but nobody's really home, you know what i mean. anyway im just leaving the rig on in the background while i putter around the shack. maybe ill try 80m later when it gets darker and see if the ragchewers are out. anybody else having a similar night or is it just my part of the country thats dead right now
  19. I'm having problems with my scratch-built 40m superheterodyne receiver based on the W7ZOI design. Using a 4.195 MHz IF with a crystal ladder filter, but getting intermittent oscillation in the IF strip. MC1350P IF amp with proper decoupling, but still breaks into oscillation around S9 signals. Anyone experienced similar issues? Wondering if it's insufficient isolation between stages or feedback through the power supply. Currently running 12V with 100uF + 0.1uF decoupling at each stage. AGC is functioning properly, so I don't think that's the culprit. Would appreciate any troubleshooting suggestions from fellow homebrewers.
  20. your understanding of the architecture is basically right, its a store and forward system so the message hits an RMS gateway over RF, that gateway forwards it to one of the CMS servers over internet, and then whoever youre sending to either connects to any gateway anywhere in the world and polls the CMS for new mail, or if theyre set up with a Telnet connection they might get it another way. the CMS is really the hub of the whole thing. for your actual issue though id check the pat logs more carefully, there should be something in there about why the session is terminating early. run it with verbose logging if you can. 144.990 is a common winlink packet freq so that part sounds fine. one other thing -- some gateways are picky about the SSID you connect with, try with and without an SSID and see if that changes anything.
  21. yeah what he said about not counting dots and dashes, that'll wreck you. i made that mistake for like two months before someone told me. i just use the morse code ninja stuff on youtube now and honestly ive been making slow but steady progress. also there's an app called morse mania that i use on the bus sometimes which helps. the main thing is just consistency i think, even like 10-15 minutes every single day beats an hour on the weekend
  22. Your setup should work fine for getting started! For 2 meters, it's 60-C, or 60-second t/r sequence and sub-mode C. The K1JT Quick Start Guide to Q65 recommends the following t/r sequences and sub-modes. I'd recommend jumping straight to Q65-60C on 144.170 MHz rather than starting with the older JT65 mode - it's more sensitive and better suited for today's EME activity.
  23. yeah i caught about 45 minutes of that opening before dinner and it was pretty wild, worked 6 stations in Argentina and one guy in Chile who was running barefoot into a dipole, signal was like he was next door. you really did miss a good one. the flux was sitting at like 158 that morning which i guess helped. on the IC-905 thing, my buddy up in Vermont got one a few months back and says the 10ghz side of it is really impressive if you have the module for it, but he's had some software quirks with the firmware, nothing deal breaking just annoying. probably worth waiting for another revision if you're not in a hurry. the price tag is also... yeah.
  24. Ideal SSB shows 70-2700 Hz spectrum, but most contesters use 2.4 kHz or narrower filtering. Energy outside the passband creates IMD distortion that doesn't improve readability. At 6+ kHz separation, distortion should be -40 dB down from passband signal - poor quality signals exceed 6 kHz width at -40 dB. Modern DSP transmitters typically use 150 Hz high-pass filtering to remove problematic low frequencies. Question for the group: We're limited to about 3 kHz unlike broadcast's 16+ kHz, so is there justification for expensive wide-range microphones? Getting maximum energy in our 3 kHz window without harmonics outside the desired bandwidth seems more important than freq response beyond what we can use. What spectral analysis tools are you using to verify clean transmission? SpectraPLUS or similar software lets you graphically see what various settings do to output.
  25. so ive been going back and forth on this for a few weeks now and cant really make up my mind. im doing a fair bit of hilltop portable operating, mostly 2m and 70cm, mix of SSB weak signal stuff and hitting the local repeaters when im out hiking. right now i just throw up a jpole or a slim jim on a painters pole and it works okay but i keep thinking theres gotta be something better for the weak signal side of things. the question is whether a small yagi — thinking maybe a 5 element on 2m — is actually worth hauling up a hill versus just getting a decent gain collinear that i could leave up all the time and use for both voice and weak signal. i know the yagi is gonna kill it for pointing at a specific station but when youre doing portable you dont always know exactly who youre gonna work or from which direction. collinear keeps the omnidirectional pattern which seems more practical. anyone been through this same kind of decision? i dont mind building something if thats the better way to go, ive made a few wire antennas before but never a yagi from scratch.
