dipole vs vertical for 40m — am i overthinking this

so ive been going back and forth on this for probably three weeks now and i need someone to just tell me if im making it more complicated than it needs to be. my situation is i have a decent sized backyard, maybe 80 feet across, and im trying to decide whether to put up a 40m dipole or go with a vertical. the dipole would have to be kind of low, maybe 25-30 feet at the apex, which i know isnt ideal. the vertical i was looking at is a hustler 6BTV which a buddy of mine runs and swears by.

i mostly want to work dx when conditions are good but im also just getting into HF so honestly half the time ill probably be doing local stuff too. the ground here is pretty average i think, not great not terrible, clay-ish soil if that matters for the vertical question. i keep reading that a low dipole radiates more like a cloud warmer which is bad for dx but then again the vertical needs a good radial system and that sounds like its own whole project. anyone actually run both and can give me a real comparison?

yeah you're kind of overthinking it but also not, because the ground question actually does matter for the vertical. clay soil is decent but youre still going to want at least 16-20 radials if you want the 6BTV to perform anywhere close to spec. without a decent radial field it'll work but you'll be leaving signal on the table. the thing about a low dipole on 40 isnt that its useless, its just that the takeoff angle is high so youre better suited for shorter skip, like 500-1500 miles or so. for local ragchewing that might actually be fine or even preferable.

if dx is the priority and you can commit to laying radials, vertical wins for 40 in my opinion. but if you just want something that works and you can throw up on a weekend, the dipole will get you on the air and you can refine later. first antenna is almost never your last antenna anyway.

i ran a 6BTV for a couple years before i put up a 2 element yagi and honestly the vertical does work for dx if you feed it right. my radial field was pretty janky at first, like 8 radials that were all different lengths, and it still made contacts into europe on 40 and 20. wasnt stellar but it worked. the main thing that drove me nuts with it was the noise floor, verticals just pick up more local QRN in my neighborhood and that got old during the solar minimum when signals were already weak. the dipole my friend runs at similar height is actually quieter on receive even though his transmitted signal is about the same on their end according to signal reports.

so maybe factor in your local noise situation too. if you live near a lot of switching power supplies and LED dimmers and all that junk, vertical might frustrate you more than you expect
