so ive been licensed for about 8 months now and i keep hearing people talk about how 10 meters is gonna be amazing this solar cycle but i honestly cant tell when its actually open vs just dead. like i'll tune around and hear nothing and then randomly catch someone from brazil at like s9 and then its gone again 20 minutes later.

i've been checking dxmaps and sometimes the solar flux index is like 180 and i still hear nothing on 10, other times its lower and theres stuff everywhere. am i misunderstanding how this works? also whats a good SFI number to even bother turning the radio on for 10m DX? i have a pretty basic vertical so maybe thats part of it too

yeah 10m is tricky because the flux index alone doesnt tell the whole story — you also gotta watch the K index and A index. if the K index is above like 3 or 4 youre probably gonna have a rough time even with decent solar flux, geomagnetic disturbances just kill HF propagation especially on the higher bands.

the thing about 10m is it really opens in specific windows, not all day. late morning into early afternoon your local time is usually the sweet spot for transequatorial stuff, and sometimes theres a nice long path opening in the evenings that catches people off guard. i've worked southern africa on 10m at times i wouldve bet money the band was dead. honestly just leave a receiver on with the squelch off while you do other stuff and you'll start to get a feel for when it wakes up. dxmaps and pskreporter are your friends, filter to 10m and watch the spots roll in before you even pick up the mic.

oh man i was so confused by this exact thing when i started. someone finally explained to me that solar flux is like a rough indicator of HF conditions in general but each band has its own personality if that makes sense. 10m needs pretty high flux to reliably open for DX, like consistently above 150 is when it gets really fun, but even at 120 or so you can get surprise openings especially around the equinoxes.

a vertical will work fine honestly, 10m doesnt require a fancy antenna to have fun. i work a lot of DX on a simple ground plane. just takes patience and being there at the right time
