so ive been studying for the Amateur Extra for about 3 months now and i feel pretty solid on most of it but there are definitely some sections where im just kind of memorizing without really understanding whats going on. like the filter theory and the transmission line stuff makes sense to me but some of the op-amp questions and the more advanced propagation stuff i honestly just feel like im pattern matching the answers at this point.

anyone remember what actually caught them off guard on the real exam? i know the question pool is public so theoretically you can just memorize everything but i'd rather actually understand it. also curious if getting the Extra actually changes how you operate day to day or if its mostly just for the extra HF privileges in the sub bands. i already have my General so i can get on most of HF anyway, just not the cw portions or the very low end of some of the phone bands.

taking it at a club session in like 6 weeks if everything lines up right

the math heavy stuff is what gets people, specifically anything around resonant circuits and calculating impedance or figuring out the bandwidth of a filter from Q values. a lot of folks just skip over that because you can sometimes logic your way through the multiple choice but honestly if you take maybe one afternoon and just work through the formulas by hand a few times it sticks way better than flashcards.

the transmission line section tripped me up a bit too, standing wave ratios and the stuff about matching networks. i kept second guessing myself on the ones about velocity factor. and yeah, getting Extra does open up some genuinely less crowded real estate on 75 and 40, the CW sub-bands on 80 are nice and quiet if youre into that. day to day not a huge difference if youre already a General but it feels good to have the full ticket honestly.

i just passed mine like two months ago and honestly the thing that surprised me was some of the regulatory questions, like the specifics around third party traffic and auxilary operations. i kind of glazed over that section assuming id know it from General but there were a few that made me go wait which rule applies here exactly. nothing crazy but worth not skimming.
