so ive been trying to get Winlink going for about three weeks now and i feel like im going in circles. Running Winlink Express on a windows 10 box, got a Signalink USB hooked up to my IC-7300, and im trying to connect to a nearby RMS gateway i can see listed in the frequency list. The session just times out every time, says no response from RMS. I can hear other people making connections on the frequency — i think thats what im hearing anyway — so the gateway is clearly up.

My question is whether this is a soundcard level thing or something with how im configuring the AX.25 side. I've got Winlink Express set to Vara HF but honestly i dont fully understand the difference between Vara HF and Winlink's packet modes. should i even be on Vara HF for this or should i be running packet? The IC-7300 is set to DATA mode, USB-D i think. VOX is triggering but i have no idea if the audio levels are right. PTT seems to be keying because i can see the TX light go on.

also is there any way to test if my outgoing signal is actually decodable before i burn more time troubleshooting the gateway side. feel like im missing something obvious here

yeah a few things jump out at me. first off if you're on VARA HF you actually need the VARA HF modem software installed and licensed separately — its not built into Winlink Express, its a separate application from EA5HVK. a lot of people miss that. if you didn't buy the license VARA still works but its speed-limited, shouldnt stop you from connecting though.

for the IC-7300 you want to make sure your USB audio levels are sane. in Winlink Express there's a built in level meter when you go to the session window — you want your TX audio driving around 40-50% in VARA, the 7300 can easily overdrive and cause all kinds of splatter that'll make the gateway reject you. also double check that compression is off on the radio, and the TX bandwidth is set wide enough for VARA — i usually run 2700hz or so.

the other thing worth checking is whether the RMS gateway you're targeting is actually a VARA HF gateway. not all of them are, some only do Winmor or packet. look at the Winlink RMS list online and filter by mode, or just try a Telnet session first just to confirm your messages actually flow end to end before you troubleshoot the RF side.

Telnet test is the move honestly, just eliminates half the variables right away. if you can send and receive via Telnet your account is fine and the issue is definitely RF/modem side.

also worth trying ARDOP instead of VARA if you're still stuck — its free and built into Winlink Express without any extra software. slower but it works and its good for just confirming your radio is actually making a proper connection to the gateway. once you get one successful session the rest usually makes more sense.
