so ive been doing POTA for a while now and someone in my local club mentioned WWFF and honestly i didnt even know it was a thing until like two weeks ago. been reading through the website and its a bit confusing to navigate, at least for me. from what i can tell its basically similar to POTA but more international and the references cover a wider range of protected areas? like nature reserves and wildlife refuges and that kind of thing.

anyway i found out theres a WWF reference not too far from me, its a state wildlife management area and it qualifies apparently. planning to head out there next weekend with the KX3 and a wire antenna. my question is mostly around the logging side of things — do i need to pre-announce the activation somewhere specific, and do i upload to a separate database from POTA or is there crossover. also wondering if its worth trying to get spotted on the WWFF cluster or if just using POTA spots works fine for the hunters out there. any advice from people whove done both would be great

welcome to the rabbit hole haha. yeah WWFF is its own separate program with its own database over at wwff.co and you do want to pre-spot yourself if you can, there's a self-spotting tool on the site. the cluster activity is a bit different from POTA — WWFF has its own spotting network but honestly a lot of the hunters also watch pota spots and dx clusters so you'll probably get picked up either way depending on band conditions.

one thing worth knowing is that a lot of references are dual-listed between WWFF and whatever national program covers your country, so in the US that means KFF references. same park, two log uploads basically. its a little tedious but once you get the workflow down its not bad. for the log format they want an ADIF file just like POTA so your KX3 setup should be fine as long as youre logging callsigns and keeping track of the reference number. have a good activation, those WMAs can be really nice spots

I did my first WWFF last summer at a national wildlife refuge and it was a great time. the contacts were slow at first but once i got spotted things picked up pretty fast. dont stress too much about the pre-announcement, some people do it days ahead on the WWFF facebook group and some just self-spot when they get on the air. either way works. the 40 meter dipole i threw up in a tree worked great, i imagine the KX3 with a wire will do just fine
